Mala Heviya: Haus der Hoffnung

I received the opportunity to study at Universität der Künste (University of the Arts) in Berlin, Germany in the summer of 2016. This is an example of the work I produced while I was studying abroad. “What is Home?” is a workshop created by myself and designer, Emma Damiani, organized in unison with Klasse Hickmann of Universität Der Künste and a 2nd Grade class from the JFK International School in Berlin.

Our workshop opened up a discussion with the children about the Yazidi refugees, the creation of Mala Heviya: Haus Der Hoffnung, a refugee centre, and the importance of what home means to yourself and those around you.

We created a documentary of the workshop and had a conversation with the children that participated in this project. The 2nd-grade class drew out what home meant to them on various boxes that were later exhibited as an installation alongside the documentary and children’s book at UdK Rundgang 2016.

*The documentary is not available due to privacy concerns. Please contact the designer if you are interested in viewing the documentary.

What is Home? - A Children’s Book
This children's book was designed to belong alongside the "What is Home?" poster that was designed by Emma Damiani. This book was used to introduce the stories of the Yazidi refugees to the 2nd-grade class during story time. The concept behind this book was to design it like a children's book: using a larger type size and incorporating imagery and photographs for visual reference.
